How to Make a Small Living Room Look Bigger

If you are living in a small apartment or condominium unit your first problem would probably be how to save space in your living room. Your solution will depend on your budget.  Are you willing to make a total renovation or will you settle for simple solutions like rearranging the furniture or just painting some walls?

Here are basic ways you can try to make your living room a little more spacious.

Remove Clutter.  One of the first thing to do is to make an assessment of your living room furniture, furnishings and decorations.  Make a decision on the things you want to dispose and what you want to keep.  Save space by having a functional storage to organize your stuff.  Below are some suggestions you may want to look at.

Try to be a Minimalist.  Never add decor if it's not necessary.  Don't be tempted to buy that vase if it will just take up space on a shelf or table.  Less is more.  Too much stuff leave little room for movement.  Here's a guide on how to be an expert minimalist.

Size and Weight  Choose small sized and light furniture for rooms with limited space.  Whatever you put in your room should be in proportion to the available space.  Don't put a bulky sofa when your room can only take an armchair.

Here's a suggestion for a simple, light sofa that doesn't look massive for a small area.  This converts to a bed for unexpected guests who'll stay overnight.

Simple Pattern  I prefer plain fabrics for a small living room but if you insist on patterns, choose the simple, less obvious designs. Avoid big, bold  and busy ones.  An example is this plain, light curtain that gives a sense of height and airy surroundings.

Mirror  If your budget allows it, try to put a large mirror on your wall. This will give the illusion of space in your living room.
